Rata and the forest Creatures

Today we read a traditional tale known as 'Rata and the tree'. It is a nice traditional tale that teaches us how to respect nature and the things that nature provides us. Our task was to use a Venn diagram to show the differences between Rata and the forest creatures. Here is Htoo Say Wah's work.

All about Rainbows - By Christine

Making our own Maths questions

Today we had a picture of four monkeys and we had to make a maths
questions using the picture.  We made heaps of questions and then
solved them.

There are 4 monkeys sitting together. These are half of the total
number of monkeys in the jungle. How many monkeys are there
in the whole jungle?

Reihaneh’s picture of her thinking.
Answer is 8

Soliana’s Question
Four monkeys went for a picnic. They took three pizzas with them.
How much pizza will each monkey have if they share them equally?

Christine solved Soliana’s problem.
Answer is three quarters (3/4)

Htoo Say’s Question
There are 4 monkeys in a family. There are 6 families of monkeys
in the jungle. If each family has the same number of monkeys,
how many monkeys will be there altogether?

Solved by Reihaneh. See her picture of her thinking.
Answer is 24

Mrs Grady’s Question
There are 4 monkeys having a rest on the rocks.
Suddenly another group joined them which doubled their numbers.
How many monkeys were there altogether?

+=
      4          +          4     =                   8
Double (4 + 4 = 8), (4 and 4 equals to 8)   Or
4 x 2 = 8,  because 4 monkeys x 2 groups = 8

Kitione’s Question
We can see some monkeys in the picture. These are ⅙ of the total number
of monkeys in the jungle. How many monkeys are there in the whole jungle?

Solved by Htoo Say Wah
Answer is 24

Kindness

Today we had a discussion on kindness during our hangout. We also talked about how we can demonstrate school values when in a lockdown at home. Here is how Ana spreads kindness in her bubble.

Reading a book to my little brother when he's sad.

Tucking my little brother in bed when he's tired.

Listening to my sister when she wants to tell me something.

Writing a letter to all the people who have  been nice to me.

Numbers everywhere

Today we had to think of places where we find numbers in our daily lives. Here is a presentation that shares our investigation. We were surprised to see that we find them everywhere.

Wasps are pests

Wasps are introduced insects in
New Zealand. They came from the European countries. When the aircraft was going to come to New Zealand the wasps snuck in the parts of the aircraft. When they landed the wasps came out of their hiding spots and went into our forests. After sometime they multiplied into a great number of wasps. Now wasps are a great problem in New Zealand.

We can find about 20,000 wasps per hectare of land. They rob honey from bees and eat bee larvae. They eat beetles and butterflies. Some butterflies have totally disappeared because of the wasps. Wasps are known to attack bird nest and eat their chicks. They have no enemies because they are on top of the food chain.
We need to find a way to protect our environment from wasps.

Creatures living in our gardens

One of the tasks for today was to explore our backyards. We went out and took pictures of all the living things that we could find in our gardens. Here is a presentation by Reihaneh that tells us all  what she found in her garden.

Wasps are Pests

Wasps are introduced insects. This means they came from overseas. They came from Europe. Some wasps hid in the planes that were coming to New Zealand from Europe. When the aircraft landed in New Zealand the wasps came outside and went into the forests. They multiplied themselves quickly and began destroying our environment.

Wasps rob honey from bees. They like to eat bee larvae.Wasps eat beetles and butterflies too. Some butterflies have completely disappeared from our environment. Wasps eat chicks and attack birds nest. There are about 20,000 wasps per hectare of land. Wasps have no enemies because they are at the top of the food chain.

We need to find a way to stop wasps from growing because they are harmful for us and our environment.

A fun Create Activity

Today, one of the fun activities was to make an animal with leaves and write 3 three facts about it.

Here is what some of us did.

All about wasps being pests

Punua has read and shared information about wasps in the slide show below. It explains why wasps are pests and why they do not have any enemies.
